Here's How Peterson Did It

You know how well so many were delighted by Jordan Peterson's response to Cathy Newman last week.

Well here is a wonderful analysis of how it was done, and how you might be able to do it yourself under pressure.

God, where could I have found anything close to this 50 years ago?

  1. I concur that it was outstanding.

Essentially, we technical types are trained in STEM but receive no training in the interpersonal self-defense verbal skills studied buy Peterson.

I too could have benefited greatly had I known these skills.

Because of time and schooling limitations, we concentrate on our specialties, and became techno weenies.

Maybe this stuff comes with maturity.

One must also have the benefit of being at least on an equal footing with the bully. But if you are employed by the bully, you are screwed.

I also wonder if there is more to debate than is shown here which is passive defense. For example, it did not seem to show any passion and drive, only parrying. Peterson was content to draw, not fight to win.

    1. In summary, this analysis of the Peterson video was an introduction to passive self defense in a civil verbal combat.

It presupposes that one wants to remain civil and genteel.

Peterson was a guest using the opportunity to sell his book. It was not his goal to persuade or prevail. Only to be a good guest and be inoffensive.

I might point out that people don't like having people around then that engage them in verbal combat. If one wants to have a stable personal relationship, that is no place for verbal combat.

Megyn Kelly is an example of how to be obnoxious.

    2. Exactly.
And as a trained psychologist, he knows how to listen and analyze.
      Not be offended.
